The best Kalimpong homestays are in the forest villages around town. Choose Lava or Loleygaon for misty forest, walks and the canopy walk. Choose Pedong for Silk Route history. Kalimpong is about 2.5 hours from Bagdogra or NJP. A loop through two or three villages makes an easy, unhurried trip.
Which Kalimpong village should you stay in?
| Place | Known for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Kalimpong town | Flower nurseries, Durpin and Deolo hills, Dr Graham’s Homes, the Haat Bazaar | A base with shops and restaurants |
| Lava | Monastery, edge of Neora Valley National Park, misty forest | Forest walks, birding, cold winter mornings |
| Loleygaon | Old-growth forest, canopy walk, Kanchenjunga sunrise point | Quiet nature stays |
| Pedong | Old Silk Route town, Damsang fort ruins, 19th-century monastery, cardamom farms | History, a gateway towards Sikkim’s Silk Route |
| Algarah | Ridge village on the road to Lava and Pedong | A quiet stop between villages |
What is Lava like?
Lava is a misty village beside Neora Valley National Park. The park is one of the richest forests in the region and a habitat of the red panda. Most visitors come for the monastery, the forest trails and the cool air; in winter, mornings can bring snow. Like the Dooars parks, Neora Valley usually closes to visitors during the monsoon. Check before planning a forest visit between June and September.
What is there to do in Loleygaon?
Loleygaon is a small hamlet surrounded by old cypress forest. Its canopy walk, a hanging bridge strung through the trees, is the main sight. A sunrise point faces Kanchenjunga. The rest of the day is for walking and resting. Lava and Loleygaon are close enough to see both from one homestay. A night in each lets you enjoy them unhurried.
Why visit Pedong and the Silk Route?
Pedong sits on the old trade route between Tibet and the plains. The ruins of Damsang fort and a 19th-century monastery are nearby, and the hills around are covered in cardamom. Just above, Sillery Gaon is a hamlet with Kanchenjunga views. It lies on the way to Sikkim’s Old Silk Route through Zuluk. That route crosses into Sikkim and needs a permit; read our Sikkim permits guide first.
How can you plan a five-night loop?
- Night 1: Kalimpong town. Nurseries, Deolo hill and the market.
- Nights 2 and 3: Lava. Monastery, forest walks, Neora Valley when it is open.
- Night 4: Loleygaon. Canopy walk and sunrise.
- Night 5: Pedong or Sillery Gaon, then down to Siliguri or on to Sikkim.
Distances between the villages are short, but the roads are narrow and winding. Plan for one change of homestay every day or two, not more.
Evenings in Lava and Loleygaon are cold for most of the year. Ask the host whether rooms have heaters or extra blankets, and confirm that hot water is available.
