Visit Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim from October to December for clear views, or March to May for flowers. The Dooars are best from October to May. The national parks close from mid-June to mid-September. This guide sets out each month so you can match the season to your trip.

When is the best time to visit Darjeeling and Kalimpong?

For Darjeeling, March to May brings clear views and rhododendrons. October to December brings crisp skies and the best sunrises over Kanchenjunga. Kalimpong follows the same pattern: March to May and October to December are the favourites. In the monsoon the hills are green and empty. Some travelers prefer that. Views come and go with the cloud.

Village seasons add another layer. Sittong is at its most famous from November to January, during the orange harvest. Dudhya, on the Balason river, is best from October to April, when the water runs low and clear. Lava, at the edge of Neora Valley, can see snow on winter mornings.

When is the best time to visit Sikkim?

March to May is the season for flowers and clear days in Sikkim. October to December gives the clearest mountain views. North Sikkim, including Lachung and Lachen, gets heavy snow in winter, and the high roads can close. Some areas also need permits whatever the season; see our guide to Sikkim homestays and permits.

When are the Dooars national parks open?

In the Dooars, the calendar is set by the national parks. Gorumara, Chapramari and Jaldapara are open from roughly mid-September to mid-June and close for the monsoon in between. Plan a jungle stay for October to May. Winter, from November to February, is cool and comfortable; April and May are hot and humid. Our Dooars jungle homestay guide covers safaris and where to stay.

Is it worth travelling in the monsoon?

The monsoon is not a reason to stay home, but plan for it:

  • Keep a spare day at the end of the trip in case a landslide closes a road.
  • Prefer homestays close to the main road over those reached by long footpaths.
  • Pack a rain jacket and shoes with grip; leeches are common on forest trails.
  • Ask the host about road conditions the day before you travel.

Long weekends, Durga Puja, Christmas and the summer school holidays are the busiest times in the hills. Book homestays early for those dates, and expect slower traffic on the way up.
