To book a homestay safely, call the host first. Confirm dates, room, price and meals. Ask about cancellation before paying. Pay an advance only to an account in the host’s or homestay’s name. Get the booking confirmed in writing. On TripToPahar there is no booking fee. This checklist is what our team recommends.

What should you do before you call the host?

  • Read the whole listing: rooms and their prices, amenities, meals, house policies and reviews.
  • Check what has been verified. Each homestay page lists what our team checked, such as registration, host ID, address or phone.
  • Look at the location on the map, and how far it is from the road and the nearest town.
  • Note the dates you want, the number of guests and any special needs, so the call is quick.

What should you ask the host?

  • Price: is the price per room or per person, and does it change on your dates? Prices in the hills often rise in peak season.
  • Meals: which meals are included, and is there an extra charge for others?
  • Extra guests: the charge for an extra adult or child, and whether an extra bed is available.
  • Facilities: hot water, heating in winter, power backup, mobile signal and Wi-Fi.
  • Access: can a car reach the door, or is there a walk? How should you get there from Siliguri or NJP?
  • Cancellation: what happens to your advance if you cancel, or if a landslide closes the road?

Many hosts are busy in the fields or with guests during the day. If nobody answers, try again in the evening or send an inquiry from the listing with your dates.

How do you pay an advance safely?

Many homestays ask for an advance to hold a room, often by UPI or bank transfer. That is normal. To keep it safe:

  • Pay only after you have spoken to the host, not on the strength of a message from an unknown number.
  • Check that the UPI or bank account name matches the host or the homestay. Ask if it does not.
  • Pay a reasonable part of the stay, not the full amount weeks ahead. Pay more only if the host’s policy requires it and you are comfortable.
  • Keep screenshots of the payment and of the host’s confirmation.
  • Never share a one-time password (OTP) or scan a QR code to “receive” money. Receiving money never needs your PIN.

Why should you get the booking in writing?

After you agree, ask the host to confirm by message: your name, dates, room, number of guests, price, meals, the advance you paid and the balance due. A short written note avoids most misunderstandings at check-in.

What are the warning signs of a fake listing?

  • A different person or number from the one on the listing asks for payment.
  • Pressure to pay immediately to “hold the last room”.
  • A price far below similar homestays in the same village.
  • The host cannot describe the property, the route or the area.

If you see any of these, do not pay. Use Report this listing on the homestay page, and our team will check it.

What does “Verified” mean on TripToPahar?

A Verified badge means our team has checked the host’s identity or the homestay’s registration, and the property’s address. It is a strong signal, but it is not a guarantee: homestays are run independently, and your booking is with the host. Read how we check homestays for the details.

Can you review a homestay after your stay?

If you contacted the homestay through TripToPahar, you can review it from your dashboard. Honest reviews, good and bad, are what help the next traveler choose, and hosts can reply publicly.

Yes, if you take care. Pay only after speaking to the host. Check that the UPI or bank account name matches the host or homestay. Pay a reasonable part of the stay. Keep screenshots of the payment and the host’s confirmation.

What should I ask a homestay host before booking?

Ask whether the price is per room or per person. Ask which meals are included. Ask about extra-guest charges, hot water, heating and Wi-Fi. Ask how to reach the house. Ask what happens to your advance if you cancel or a landslide closes the road.

How can I spot a fake homestay listing?

Warning signs include a different number asking for payment and pressure to pay at once. A price far below similar homestays is another. So is a host who cannot describe the property or the route. If you see any, do not pay. Report the listing.
